Swatch

So being new to this whole blogging thing I decided to grab some inspiration from WordPress.  They have these writing prompts for bloggers that are designed to grease the wheels and get us writing.  Sometimes I feel like I want to talk about so many things that it all becomes a jumble and I move forward with nothing.  So I am embracing the jumble and just writing.  This weeks #discoverchallenge is to preserve something ephemeral by transforming it…  So I am clearly taking a liberty here, but still staying within the relatively loose guidelines:)

When I was in the 7th grade, Swatch Watches were all the rage.  I fell in love with this cool flourescent and black #swatch that I saw at the mall.  When my parents gave it to me for my birthday I was stoked, it was totally my style, as was much of 80s fasion I’m afraid.  I wore it everyday, except in gym.  I loved it so much I didn’t even want to sweat in my plastic watch.  One day while I was in gym class my gym locker was broken into; well someone attempted to break into it.  The lockers were old and the bottom of mine didn’t latch so this person pulled the bottom as far open as they could, hoping to find something small like cash they could squeeze throught the crack.  Well, they tried to drag my beloved Swatch through and were not successful.  Instead they broke the band and the body and scratched the face.  I came in from gym and found the sad, mangled body of my watch half on the ground and half hanging out of my locker.  It was unfixable.  I was so sad.  We even tried to find another one, but were unable to.  I kept the broken pieces in my jewelry box for years.

It’s totally cool isn’t it???

Fast forward to one night a few years ago while out to dinner with my family.  My boys were very into buying and trading sneakers (that’s a whole other blog post) and we were talking about some of the vintage sneakers they were into, which eventually led to a conversation about 80s fashion.  I told them the story about my watch and they immiately said, “mom, why don’t you try and find it on Ebay?”  Duh.  So one thing you should know about me is that I pride myself on being able to find anything online.  I mean anything.  I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of this before.  Right there at the table I opened the app and found half a dozen of my flourescent watches up for sale.  Believe it or not they went up to almost $900.  I was shocked.  But the best deal was at just over $100 and was ending in about 20 minutes.  I used my usual Ebay strategy of waiting until the final 30 seconds and going in with my highest and best and I won the auction right there at the table.

Another thing you should know is that I consider myself a serial obsessor.  So obviously I became temporarily obsessed with 80s Swatch Watches.  Over the course of the next few weeks I acquired a few more;)
